Dissecting flowers

It's always great to clear up any misunderstandings or misconceptions during a science lesson - flowers have petals not pedals - those belong on a bike! I'm sure glad we cleared that one up.

For our first exploring session, we used magnifying glasses to look at a variety of flowers that Mrs Watson kindly brought in to us.  We considered and discussed questions that got us really taking a closer look and tapping in to what we already know about flowers or what we think we know!

For our second session we kicked off with a class brainstorm sharing our knowledge of the different flower parts.  It was apparent that we knew flowers had petals, a stem, stamen and stigmas and pollen.  That's all the parts right?  Well so we thought, until we compared our brainstorm with a labelled flower diagram.

Take a look at our pic collages (ipad app) of what other flower parts we discovered as we carefully dissected our flowers:

We ran our Senior School assembly today...

...and did a fantastic job!  So much more confidence since our production!  Big ups to Room 9 for presenting your parts with confident voices and looking up at the audience occasionally!

A super shout out to our Techies - Amber and Jack who set up our sound system and laptop.  Amber made sure our video and projections were timed perfectly and Jack's job was to ensure the volume of the mic and video were ear friendly!

Our newsreport crew - Holly, Jack and Amber through a video clip, introduced Room 9's learning "news report" style and set the tone for our assembly as a reporter/interviewee situation.

Our gymnastics experts Emma H, Maya, Kobe, Toby and Nathan C deserve a special mention for showcasing their skills:
forwards rolls, forward straddle rolls, dive rolls, backwards rolls, backwards straddle rolls, handstands into forward rolls, back handsprings, back flips and a round off into a back hand spring!  Just to be specific!

Ka mau te wehi Room 9!

Here is our opening vid - we like the music - Gold by Owl City.
